Swirling Leaves Coffee Cozy

The final installment in my fall-themed coffee cozy trio is the Swirling Leaves Coffee Cozy which reminds me of the beautiful colours of the fall leaves set against a backdrop of grey skies and crisp, cool air. For anyone interested in purchasing a downloadable PDF of this pattern (plus the Pumpkin Spice Coffee Cozy and the Fall’n for Plaid coffee cozy – you get 3 for 1!), head on over to Ravelry and check out my One Knotty Dog store.

Materials

  • small amount of worsted weight acrylic yarn.
    • 1 main colour – I used Patons Canadiana in Medium Grey
    • 4 autumn leaf colours – I used Lion Brand Heartland in Yosemite, Red Heart Soft in Really Red, Caron Simply Soft in Pumpkin, Caron Simply Soft in Gold.
  • 5.25 mm crochet hook.

Size

4 3/4″ wide by 3 1/2″ tall when laying flat. I have found that this fits most typical coffee cups. Size can be adjusted to fit larger or smaller cups by adjusting the number of chains. Pattern is a repeat of 3 stitches.

Gauge

  • Not applicable

Stitches

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet

Pattern

Note:  this pattern is worked in the round.  The ch 1 at the end of each round does not count as a stitch.

ch 32, join to first chain to make a circle, ch 1.

Round 1:  sc in each ch around, join, ch 1 (32).

Round 2:  sc in first 2 stitches, on third sc use the leaf colour to pull up the first loop then complete the sc with the main colour.  *sc 3, sc with leaf colour for first loop then main colour to finish sc*.  Repeat around, sc in last stitch, join, ch 1 (32).

To make the “leaf”, pull up the first loop of the sc stitch with the leaf colour.
After creating the first loop with the leaf colour, switch back to the main colour to finish the sc stitch. You will want to carry the leaf colour through your work.

Round 3:  use the leaf colour to pull up the first loop of the first sc, use the main colour to finish the sc stitch.  *sc 3, sc with leaf colour for the first loop then main colour to finish sc*.  Repeat around, sc in last 3 stitches, join, ch 1 (32).

Round 4:  repeat round 2 with second leaf colour (32).

Round 5:  repeat round 3 with second leaf colour (32).

Round 6:  repeat round 2 with third leaf colour (32).

Round 7:  repeat round 3 with third leaf colour (32).

Round 8:  repeat round 2 with fourth leaf colour (32).

Round 9:  repeat round 3 with fourth leaf colour (32).

Round 10:  sc around, join.

Fasten off.  Weave in ends.

I cannot decide if I like it with a dark grey or a light grey background!

  1. […] Note:  this pattern is worked in the round.  The ch 1 at the end of each round does not count as a stitch.  When working on the rows with a colour change sc (the black watermelon seeds), carry the black through the work; at the end of the row do not cut the black yarn, leave in on the inside of the work and pick it up to carry through on the next colour change row. For photos of how to do the colour change check out my blog post Swirling Leaves Coffee Cozy […]
