Fall’n for Plaid Coffee Cozy

Next up in my series of fall-themed coffee cozies is this autumn coloured cozy. I love the crocheted plaid look (which I first learned from Whistle and Ivy (https://www.whistleandivy.com/) – she has really great designs!). And I have made blankets, hats, dog sweaters, pumpkins and lots of coffee cozies with this versatile stitch. There are so many colour combinations possible, but you want to stay in the same colour family and pick a light, medium, and dark shade. You can think of it as weaving a dark colour and light colour together to create that medium colour. I think it lends itself well to autumnal colours, and really – it will make your PSL so fashionable!

Materials

  • small amount of worsted weight acrylic yarn in 3 colours – light, medium and dark shades.  I used Patons Canadiana in Oatmeal for the light; Red Heart Soft in Tangerine for the medium; Lion Brand Heartland in Yosemite for the dark.
  • 5.25 mm crochet hook

Size

4 3/4″ wide by 3 1/2″ tall when laying flat. I have found that this fits most typical coffee cups. Size can be adjusted to fit larger or smaller cups by adjusting the number of chains. Pattern is a repeat of 3 stitches.

Gauge

  • not applicable

Stitches

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet

Pattern

Notes:  This pattern is worked in the round.  When changing colour, pull the new colour through to finish the stitch before the colour change.  Carry the yarn you are not using through the work. Chain stitches after a join do not count as a stitch.

With dark colour, ch 30, join to first chain to make a circle, ch 1.

Round 1:  sc around, join, ch 1 (30).

Round 2:  *dc 3, change to medium colour in last stitch, dc 3, change to dark colour in last stitch* repeat around, join, ch 2  (30).  Note: You should finish this round with the medium tone.  To work the next round, leave the dark colour to the back of your work (do not cut).

To change colour, switch to the different yarn to yarn over and pull through the last 2 loops in the double crochet stitch. You will then have the new colour on your hook to start the next double crochet with.
Carry the yarn that you are not using through the work. You will not really be able to see it in the finished piece.

Round 3:  *dc 3, change to light colour in last stitch, dc 3, change to medium colour in last stitch* repeat around, changing to dark colour in the last stitch, join, ch 1 (30).

Round 4:  repeat round 2.

Round 5:  repeat round 3.

Round 6:  with dark colour, sc around (30).

Fasten off.  Weave in all ends.

You can change the look by starting with the different colours in the plaid.
